About Lampworking

Lampworking is an ancient art and involves melting glass rods in the flame. The term lampworking comes from  early lampworkers who melted the glass on small oil lamps. These days we have torches which have extremely hot flames therefore this process is also known as Flameworking.

Each unique piece is created one by one in the flame by melting rods of glass  - layering and shaping the molten glass using heat and gravity sometimes tools.

Weelainys work is primarily in Borosilicate glass (PYREX) which is a hard glass known for its strength and durability, but also its reactive nature and unique colour palette. However she also uses the more conventional 'Soft' Soda Lime glass as was used for the traditional Murano sculptures.
